Honoring Our Veterans on Veterans Day & Beyond

3 Minutes read

As Veterans Day rapidly approaches, we at the office of Stillwater Payments wish to voice our support. Each of us has family, friends, and colleagues who have served. There will always be a special place in our hearts for American veterans.

What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day began 100 years ago with the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It was known as “The War to End All Wars” and was originally created as “Armistice Day” by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in order to encompass all U.S. veterans.

This Veterans Day will take place on Sunday, November 11. However, it will be celebrated on Monday, November 12.

Reno, Las Vegas, and Virginia City will all be holding their own Veterans Day parades. While the Las Vegas parade will begin at 9:45 a.m., Veterans Day parades in Reno and Virginia City will begin at 11:11 a.m.

According to their website, the Las Vegas Veterans Day Parade is the largest parade west of the Mississippi. That makes it second only to the New York City Veterans Day parade. (www.veteransparade.com)

The Reno Veterans Day Parade will be in honor of the first Reno citizen to die in the first World War, Private First Class Darrell Melville Dunkle. It will be kicked off with a flyover by military planes.

Working to serve those who served us

Stillwater Payments is proud to support the Reno chapter of Disabled American Veterans. This nonprofit organization as a whole, provides support for over 1 million American veterans every year. They focus on finding veterans the resources needed to pursue a happy life and to “participate in the American Dream their sacrifices have made possible”. Veterans Guest House is another local nonprofit organization we support. The Guest House as some call it for short, provides housing and care for veterans and their families seeking medical treatment in the Reno-Sparks area.  (www.veteransguesthouse.org/

Finally, we are proud to partner with the Navy Seal Foundation. This group serves as a resource for Navy Seals and their families. It assists with educational, medical, and transitional needs of Navy Seals – whether active or inactive. It also has a special branch devoted to assistance for veterans.  (https://www.navysealfoundation.org/)

Updates and a final thought for Veterans Day

This year, the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI, the White House has declared all of November as National Veterans and Military Families month.

If you’re looking to support veterans, there are dozens of charities in the U.S. dedicated to improving the quality of life for veterans and their families. These include the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation, the Fisher House Foundation, Thanks USA, Homes for Our Troops, USO, and many others.

For retailers owned by and in support of veterans, check out Nine Line, Black Rifle Coffee Company, TurboPUP, R. Riveter, Combat Flip Flops, as well as others across the country.

In addition, several national businesses are offering discounts and freebies for veterans this weekend. From free dessert at Cracker Barrel to $40 wedding dresses at Brides Across America to free haircuts, everyone is taking advantage of the chance to honor America’s veterans.  Young child waving a flag at Veterans celebration
